Flying and Corona
In the spring of 2020 it happened the start of the pandemic. While all kinds of opinions and theories, terrorist plots, and evil conspiracy theories abound I will only discuss the relationship it has had on aviation from my perspective.
The last week of February, a new virus from China again emerged on the scene. This seemed to be the usual thing. We saw several of these kinds of things in the past 20 years or so, including Bird Flu, Swine flu, and others. I did not think too much of it at first when actually it probably started in October 2019. Things started heating up the first week in March, but I did not find it impactful until I was with my family in Puerto Rico.
I usually plan a nice spring family vacation each year for my kids and their families. The previous spring we all had a great time in San Antonio, Texas. I found some great prices on tickets during spring break 2020 last November 2019 to Puerto Rico. I bought tickets for my family and grandkids. While a little challenging, we left the mainland with little problem. The grandkids were so excited to go for a first trip to a new place and see the beautiful island.
We did some fun things like tour the bioluminescent bays and jungle drives into the rain forest. We saw waterfalls, iguanas, and beautiful flowers. What a fun adventure! Old San Juan was interesting including dancing by the bay.
As usual I was monitoring things and discovered the beginning of the closure of air routes to Europe and problems with cruise ships being detained at ports because of sick passengers. Back home things were getting a little weird, as people started hoarding things like toilet paper and other basics.
The second to last night I sat on the bed discussing this impact with my wife, Crissy. I told her what it would do and bring. I also discussed early on about sudden closures in new hires and training, and possible furloughs in the future. I hoped I was high enough in seniority to weather the slow down that this could cause. I really do not know if she understood at that time what I was really saying. I could even at that first week of chaos see the events and consequences of them.
When we finally finished our fun trip we went to the airport and got through security. As we boarded the plane the US National Guard arrived at the airport to oversee screening for all new travelers. It seemed we left just in time. Back at the mainland in Houston crazy things were happening, including hoarding. I then saw the parking of aircraft. Hundreds of large planes being parked. My next few flights had only a few people on them. Then my son, who was serving a mission for the LDS Church, was sent home from Mexico. People who you normally would die for became people you may die from.
